My wardrobe Purge for Clarity

Choosing what I want to wear comes naturally.

My guide is my mood; my outfit needs to express live feelings.

I love clothes and I love accessories even more.

I have  fun with my style; it’s a reflection of me! Fashion is an art, and style is personal.

What you wear reveals a lot about you and as of lately I’ve been feeling like my wardrobe hasn’t been truly representing me.

It is time for a purge. A closet purge is what I do every seasonal change. I get rid of all things that no longer have my heart, clothes that no longer fit, old things I haven’t worn in a while and pieces that no longer serve me. I have never lived at the same place for more than a year or two. And I am proud to say that my wardrobe has made it with me through every transition. Nothing has been stolen, damaged, or went missing. But I’m no hoarder and I’ve given away and pass down bags of clothes.

It’s important to always make space for the new. Clutter takes away value and clouds your mind from creative expression.

I’m speaking from experience.

I am currently drowning as I look into my closet that’s filled with bags and bags of clothes. Rows of coats, jackets, sweaters, and random colorful pieces.  My actual mood is to just take everything and toss it, start from scratch, but better judgment declares this isn’t something I can rush. I don’t want to throw out any important pieces

that can still be used years down the line as most of my pieces have served me. And let’s not forget those sentimental memories.

So where do I start?

Before purging through my wardrobe, I made a list to guide me on what has to go.

This list included

  1. Things I haven’t worn in a while

  2. Things that no longer fit right.

  3. Things I just no longer need or want.

  4. Things that are not multifunctional.

  5. Things that are just old.

  6. Things that don’t align with who I am today.

It is important to know when to let go of things but also what you should let go. You never want to give away essential pieces which are multifunctional such as the essential leather jacket, blazer, tailored coat, or denim. Lest you should regret, because once you let go there’s no getting it back.

My next list was for clarity.

  1. What direction am I taking my style?

  2. What does my style say about me?

  3. What is my signature?

  4. How do I elevate my current style?

My current style should reflect the woman I am today.

If I had to describe my personal style the best term to use would be eccentric. It’s Afro chic because of my head wraps, prints and natural hair styles. It’s a blend of vibrant colors and prints. My style compliments me simply because it just works for me. Letting go is going to be hard. As I’m sitting here writing this, I’m pondering how I will be going through my closet for the fifth time. While I don’t plan on shopping as of yet, as my focus right now is on saving and I know the danger of shopping and how it negatively interferes with it. But saving or no saving, shopping is necessary when there’s a decent sale.

Last weekend I went to the mall, I came across one of my favorite jewelry stores, Lovisa. Which I like to call the adult Claire’s. They had a sale 3 for $10 and 5 for $10. Perfect right in my budget. It was an investment considering one piece was $11.99 regular price ! And my jewelry box was getting rusty. I bought 8 stunning pieces of jewelry. One in particular which is my favorite is a golden tarantula with black studs. Which is ironic because I hate spiders, but this earring is stunning. It has become a staple piece because I literally wear it everyday.

To conclude, it became clear to me tonight. I can’t connect who I am currently with my wardrobe. I thought this over thoroughly with guided questions such as: Who am I? What do I say, without uttering a word, when I walk into a room? As this year comes to a close I think about my journey and everything I’ve been through, life’s curve balls and woes….I have learned that I am just getting started. And I’m exhausted! Lord knows but seriously, I am only just getting started.

I am an outspoken, passionate, creative, strong, beautiful, hardworking, fun, loving, and fearless Queen. And that’s what my clothes need to say about me.
